As we continue to consider non-human timescales, Plant Mater invites us to listen from the perspective of plant life. Through deep listening, we attend to the slow processes of photosynthesis, water, light, decomposition, and growth, creating a shared sonic ecosystem in which human performers and living plants shape one another’s presence through sound, light, movement, and attention.

Taking “plant matter” as a source of maternal wisdom, Plant Mater engages directly with these life forms through a range of listening and sonic practices: sonifying changes in plant capacitance through sensors and original instruments, translating plant processes into text and graphic-score prompts for improvisation, and recording the movements of roots and the activity of compost. The resulting performance asks us to shift our attention beyond human time and encounter plants not as passive subjects, but as collaborators in an evolving musical environment.
